The objective of the operation was to capture the Italian island of Pantelleria, which was located between Tunisia and Sicily, and which was being used by the Axis powers as a base for air and naval operations in the Mediterranean.
The operation was launched on June 11, 1943, and involved a combination of air and naval bombardment, followed by a ground invasion by British and American troops. The bombing campaign was particularly intense, with over 2,000 tons of bombs dropped on the island over a period of several days. The ground invasion began on June 11 and was successful within a matter of days, with the island being declared secure on June 15.
